A Message from the Director

“Built on experience. Driven by passion. Focused on your child.” As the Director and Founder of Janus Liberal Arts High School, my journey in education has been both deeply personal and purpose driven. With a Master’s in Educational Administration, Bachelor Degrees in Social Welfare and Education, and over 30 years of experience serving youth in Milwaukee, I have dedicated my life to creating spaces where students are seen, supported, and prepared for life beyond the classroom.
From founding Northern Star School (2002-2010) to leading Janus College Preparatory & Arts Academies, Inc. (JCPAA, Inc) and serving as a Lead Teacher, Math Teacher and Math Teacher Leader in public schools, I have had the privilege of working with students across many backgrounds and learning styles. These experiences have shaped my belief that every child deserves access to a high-quality education—one that not only challenges them academically, but nurtures who they are as individuals.
I am deeply passionate about the power of a liberal arts education. I believe it is one of the strongest ways we can prepare young people for the future—whether that path leads to college, the trades, the performing arts, entrepreneurship, or careers we have yet to imagine. A strong foundation in core academics, paired with creativity, critical thinking, and real-world application, gives students the tools to truly thrive.
At Janus Liberal Arts High School, we are building something special from the ground up. Our curriculum is innovative and interdisciplinary, connecting academic content to real life so students understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters. We are intentional about developing well-rounded individuals—young people with resilience, confidence, and the soft skills needed to navigate high school and life beyond it. Equally important is our commitment to the whole child. Guided by the philosophy of Abraham Maslow, we recognize that students cannot thrive academically unless their basic human needs are met. We care deeply about our students—not only as learners, but as individuals—and we strive to create an environment where they feel safe, valued, and supported in every way.
We are also committed to making private education accessible. I strongly believe that families should not have to choose between quality and affordability. At Janus, we work to ensure that students can receive an exceptional education at a cost that makes sense for families—a true win-win for our community.
To our parents, your role is essential. We ask that you partner with us—supporting your children in their endeavors and standing alongside us as we provide the tools, structure, and guidance they need to transition successfully into life after high school.
And to our students, families, and the greater community—I invite you to be part of this vision. We are seeking strong, curious, and creative young leaders—students interested in STEM, the arts, history, world cultures, and making a meaningful impact. Together, we are not just opening a school—we are building a future. One that will uplift not only our students, but our community, our society, and the world beyond.
I look forward to all of these “firsts,” and I look forward to building this with you. “Join me in building something meaningful—for your child, and for our future.”
With purpose and passion,
Valerie Benton
